Spring 2017 Community Grant Recipients

The Spring 2017 Grant recipients have been chosen! The Spring Grants Ad-Hoc committee had the difficult task of choosing only a few recipients from the many deserving organizations that submitted applications. We are happy to announce that a total of $6650 was awarded this cycle. The recipients are:

  • Greer Elementary School Book Fairies  $1000 - Last summer, a group of teachers collected a wide variety of books that students wanted to read over the summer. During the last week of school, the teachers guided them to pick out books to “pack” in two different bags with the understanding that they will get them later in the summer. As a surprise, one day in June and another in July the teachers dressed as reading fairies, rode in a school bus to the children’s home and delivered the books. This grant will directly pay for the children’s books for this program to be repeated this summer.
  • Computers for Kids $1500 - This grant will fund one-time expenses required to purchase electronics and robotics equipment used for Maker engineering projects This summer C4K will offer a Haunted House Design & Engineering Camp where our youth members will build engineering and construction skills while working with this equipment.
  • Barrett Early Learning Center $1200  - This grant will fund the project titled Barrett's Big Beautiful Backyard, which will expand upon the successful Barrett’s Big Beautiful Garden project by incorporating nature exploration into outdoor activities. The grant will pay for workshops from “Growing up Wild”, supplies for nature activities, supplies for handmade books, and field trips to Wild Rock and Ivy Creek Natural Area.
  • Virginia Discovery Museum $2350  - This grant will support the administrative costs to increase their Sponsored Admission Program by 25% in 2017.  Currently, admission to the museum is $8 per person, a significant amount for a family living below the poverty line. With the Sponsored Admission Program, this barrier to entry is eliminated.
  • Muscles with Russell  $600 - This grant will provide Interactive Wellness Books to the 4 Senior Centers in Charlottesville. The primary goal of MWR is to provide a program about health about wellness and nutrition to preschool and elementary aged students that is both inspiring and enriching. After realizing there was an unmet need to serve seniors within the community, MWR developed materials using the same principles to serve the senior population.
