PIADS in Action

Junior League of Charlottesville members complete approximately 3,500 hours of service annually through our Projects in a Day program. The majority of this service is aligned to our league’s Issue-Based Community Impact focus, Empowering Women through Mentorship. The list below contains examples of the range of service and giving projects we participate in.

Hands On

Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry 

Our volunteers sort produce and other donations, stock shelves, check clients in and help them choose the foods their families will eat, help in the parking lot, and pack groceries to deliver to clients who are unable to come to the pantry.  

Jefferson Area Children’s Health Improvement Program (JACHIP) Birthday Cards 

Members join together and craft birthday cards to be mailed to children whose families are enrolled in JACHIP.  

The Letter Project 

In collaboration with a nationwide initiative, members gather to write, read, and sort encouraging letters for women in need of inspiration.  

Ronald McDonald House: Meals from the Heart 

Our members bring ingredients and prepare a meal at the Ronald McDonald House for families brought to Charlottesville so their children can receive medical treatment for a serious illness or injury. 

 

Giving 

Shelter for Help in Emergency  

One of our monthly giving drives involved collecting personal items of need for the Shelter for Help in Emergency. The Shelter provides services for victims of domestic violence in our community. 

Families Learning Together Snack Drive 

Members donated healthy snacks for the Fluvanna County Public Schools’ Families Learning Together program. Their mission is to break the cycle of intergenerational illiteracy by providing undereducated parents with the skills and opportunities to develop their potential and reach desired goals for themselves and their children. 

Thanksgiving Basket Drive for Greenstone on 5th Community Center 

We were able to collect over 30 Thanksgiving baskets that included all necessary items for a Thanksgiving dinner, along with giftcards, for residents of the Greenstone community located off 5th Street. 

Holiday Gift Drive for Jefferson Area Children’s Health Improvement Program (JACHIP)

Members collected over 30 interactive holiday gifts for the children of parent’s participating in Jefferson Area Children’s Health Improvement’s Parenteen Program.

 

Interpersonal 

Girls’ Geek Day 

Each month, our members participate in Girls’ Geek Day, a countywide initiative focused on sparking elementary school-aged girls’ interest in technology and computing by providing a fun, collaborative, hands-on environment to learn new tech skills and helping them connect to other STEM programs in the community 

Greenstone on 5th Game Night 

Members gather and play games with the children at the Greenstone on 5th Community Center. 

Princess for a Day 

Our volunteers have partnered with a new local initiative that brings together girls between the ages of 3 and 16 for monthly lessons on etiquette and poise with tips from local pageant winners. The cause focuses on empowerment and self-confidence.  

 

Special Events

Splash for a Cure 5K 

This is one of many races the JLC helps with. The Splash for a Cure 5K benefits the Ishan Gala Foundation, an organization committed to improving the quality of life of children fighting cancer both during and after treatment. 

Meals on Wheels Taste This! 

A volunteer favorite, our members assist with Meals on Wheels’ annual fundraiser to help raise funding to provide food for our homebound neighbors. 

Boys and Girls Club Cycling Challenge 

Each fall members enjoy volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club’s annual Cycling Challenge in Crozet.  

Music Resource Center’s Party Like a Rockstar 

Every year our members get dressed up in cocktail attire and volunteer at Party Like a Rock Star. This event is a fundraising effort to support the financial needs of the Music Resource Center and fulfill the goal of funding scholarships for 200 students this year
